The Freeway was manufactured in the late '70s
and early '80s by HM Vehicles of Burnsville Minnesota. It featured 55
MPH freeway travel at 100 miles per gallon (measured under special
conditions). The Freeway aimed at providing a cost-per-passenger-mile
that was competitive with that of a bus.
The Freeway is a one person vehicle,
though another person can squeeze in behind the seat for short trips.
The back window is a hatch that opens to allow access to space for
several bags of groceries, luggage, your medium sized dog, or your
toolbox. It is gasoline powered. HM Vehicles also sold a
battery-powered version, as well as a very rare diesel.
It is fun to drive; the
steering is quick. Its small size makes it easy to park, though it has
no reverse gear. It is street-legal; having lights, a windshield wiper,
automatic transmission, a defroster, turn signals and a horn.
The Freeway shown in
these images was one of the best examples of the vehicle in existence.
It had only about 2000 miles on it and has been kept garaged. It had
the original owner's manual, shop manuals, and product literature. I
got occasional requests for copies of the literature, though, I regret,
I have not been able to get permission from the copyright holder to
make copies.
The Freeway
would make a good short-haul commuter vehicle, but really should be in
the care of a collector. A business might use it for a roadside
attraction, or in advertising. The potential exists to convert it to
electric or hybrid. The asking price was US$4999, which considering its
condition and allowing for inflation, was a bargain.
The
Freeway was sold a few years ago. I no longer have information on it
beyond what you see here.
